The Greek Sirens.
The origins of the Greek sirens began with three monstrous sea-nymphs named Peisinoe, Aglaope, and Thelxiepeia. They had the power of enchanting and charming people with their voices and the ability alter their looks to draw in what the targets eyes desired. They were believed to have lured sailors to their deaths, with their bewitching songs, calling forth storms and waves. It was said they had the body of a bird and the head of woman or sometimes the entire upper body of a woman that was connected to monstrous talons to claw at the flesh.
They were formerly the handmaidens of the goddess Persephone but when Persephone was abducted by Hades, they where said to have received their wings at their own request, in order to be able to search after Persephone. Another myth states that as punishment for letting Persephone get taken, Demeter gave the Naiads the bodies of birds turning them into Sirens, so they may assist in the search for Persephone, but the Sirens eventually gave up and settled on the flowery island of Anthemoessa, which is located between Aeaea and the rock of Scylla, near the southwestern coast of Italy.A famous myth surrounding the Sirens was the story of their encounter with the Argonauts. It is said they where able to pass by the Sirens unharmed with the help of the poet Orpheus who drowned out their music with song, the latter began to sing, but in vain, for Orpheus rivalled and surpassed them. Another encounter was when Odysseus, in his wanderings through the Mediterranean, came near the island on the lovely beach of which the Sirens were sitting, and endeavouring to allure him and his companions, he, on the advice of Circe, stuffed the ears of his companions with wax, and tied himself to the mast of his vessel, until he was so far off that he could no longer hear their song, and as it had been decreed that they should live only till some one hearing their song should pass by unmoved, The Sirens were so distressed to see a man hear their song and still escape that they threw themselves into the sea and drowned, metamorphosing into rocks.
To this day the legends of the Sirens remain across the world over, a 100 faces, a 100 stores, a 100 depictions, a 100 songs...
