Happy Myth & Magic Monday!

The Bucca...

The bucca, is a Cornish male sea spirit similar to that of a merman but taking on the imagery of a half eel, half man. Many a deal has been done between this spirit and the cornish witches, whether that is a deal to call forth the storms of the sea, or to drown the victims of the contract, the bucca is a powerful spirit that shouldn't be overlooked or underestimated.

There is said to be two forms of this powerful spirit, Bucca Widn who is said to be a peaceful sea spirit who helps those pass and channel the water. Then there is Bucca Dhu, the bringer of storms and the tide of death. He is also referred to as Bucca Boo, as a cautionary tale by parents to keep the children away from the waters, or a watery grave is never far behind. This is also one of the many stories which gave the tale of the boogie man.

The most famous home for the Bucca is that of Lamorna Cove, but you can find this spirit making its home up and down the coves and beaches of Cornwall. Just one of the many sea spirits who calls there home Cornwall.

The Bucca is said to like offerings of rum, raw meats and sugar cane. Its said he got he taste for the finner things from that of what it would take from the ship wreaks it caused, harvesting a bounty from the pirates and smugglers of Cornwall.

Across the seas, and through the Cove,

Mighty Bucca, I call you home.
